Our city's largest airport, Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), joined the Houston Airport System in June 1969. Operated and maintained by the City of Houston Department of Aviation, the Houston Airport System functions as an enterprise fund and does not burden the local tax base for airport operations, maintenance or capital improvements.

Located on more than 8,000 acres, IAH has four runways, four terminals, an airport hotel, an air cargo distribution center, over 19,000 public parking spaces and ample room to expand to meet our customers' growing demand for additional services. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has a new air traffic control tower that will handle projected future growth at IAH well beyond the turn of the century.

The FAA classifies IAH, the 13th busiest commercial airport in the United States, as a primary domestic and international hub airport. Vital to the successful performance of our dynamic airport is the advanced technology we use throughout IAH, including Doppler radar to enhance weather prediction and highly technical navigation and landing aids to ensure safe and punctual flight operations.

Often termed a city within a city, IAH has its own water, emergency and police services, as well as facilities, structures and roadways. Additionally, IAH and all of the Houston Airport System participate in the Department of Aviation's environmental programs, and such projects are evident throughout the airport. IAH is served by more than 20 passenger airlines, which offer a variety of choices in flight schedules to approximately 150 destinations throughout the world. Houston headquartered Continental Airlines schedules over 500 flights per day from its hub airport, IAH.

Associated with the runways are navigational aids and other FAA-operated facilities which include: an Instrument Landing System for each major runway, an Airport Surveillance Radar, and other highly sophisticated navigational aids and lighting systems for all runways. The airport is also equipped with the Low Level Alert Wind Shear System. The airport's aircraft rescue and firefighting facility meets current FAA safety standards.
